Motivate Your FBO's Team to Reach Desired Objectives

In managing the day-to-day activities of your FBO operation, it’s important to motivate your service team in order to reach your desired operational objectives.

In developing your objectives, think of what your desired goal is (which is essentially a desired outcome). Objectives will help you focus on any particular task at hand and serve as a focal point for your service team as they work to achieve these goals.

For instance, if you have a safety goal to reduce risk in your operation to “a level as low as reasonably possible” (ALARP), your objective might read something like: Increase safety awareness on the ramp and in hangars in order to lessen the incidents of close calls and near misses.

In this case, your objective is to increase safety awareness and your desired outcome is to reduce close calls and near misses.

In order to support your objective, you would implement the needed initiatives to reach your desired outcome of reducing close calls and near misses. These initiatives might include additional comprehensive safety training for your team and updating your standard operating procedures (SOPs) to reflect industry best practices.

But perhaps just as important is motivating your team to WANT to accomplish the stated objective.

Motivation comes in many forms. But what motivational research has showed us is what works best is simply plain old encouragement. Employees often look to those in leadership positions for words of encouragement which verifies if they are doing a good job… or not.

For most, money alone is not enough motivation to do a job well. That is why it’s important to get out on the ramp and walk the hangars to praise your team for doing a good job when they perform at high standards. Praise also results in increased morale, job satisfaction, self-esteem and company loyalty which ultimately enhances employee retention.
