RocketRoute Supports the Daedalus D-Day 70th Anniversary and Memorial Airborne Invasion

ACUKWIK partner RocketRoute is proud to sponsor and assist flight crews in the Daedalus D-Day 70th Commemoration.

For the first time since D-Day, a formation of up to 10 Dakota aircraft will depart from the UK (Daedalus Aerodrome, Lee-on-Solent) and fly to France, Carentan, Normandy and undertake a mass drop over 100 “round canopy” parachutists wearing WW2 uniforms.

This will be the first time since D-Day that an ‘airborne invasion formation’ will have taken place from the UK to France.

Subject to weather and operational requirements aircraft, departures will commence between 10:00 and 13:00 Local on the 4th June 2014.

Viewing of the departing aircraft is available from the seafront only (note: there is no public access to Lee-on-Solent Daedalus Aerodrome). There will however will be a public D-Day 70th Memorial Service at Lee-on-Solent seafront Civic War Memorial on the evening of the 3rd June at 18:30L. The service will be closed by a D-Day 70th Memorial Flypast of historic aircraft types representing those flown from Daedalus, Lee-on-Solent on D-Day and during WW2.

Daedalus was the most active south coast airfield on D-Day launching 435 Spitfire, Seafire, Mustang and Typhoon missions to Normandy, flown by Fleet Air Arm, RAF RCAF and US Navy squadrons. Roll of Honour.

Flight Planning Support

Aircraft and parachutists are flying in from around the world to participate in this commemoration. RocketRoute has provided sponsorship to the Lee Flying Association which is hosting the UK part of the cross-channel Memorial Airborne Invasion in collaboration with the Round Canopy Parachute Team.

RocketRoute is providing flight planning and operations support to all aircraft that wish to use the support for this event including positioning flights to and from the commemoration.

Diary

3rd June – Assemble at Daedalus Lee-on-Solent Airport UK.

4th June – Formation flight departs for first time since 1944. Airborne drop 13:00 hrs in Carentan, France.

5th June – Open Day at Cherbourg Maupertus Airport, France, Airborne drop 18:00 hrs Utah Beach, Airborne drop 21:00 hrs Foucarville.

6th June – Open Day at Cherbourg Maupertus Airport, Airborne drop 18:00 hrs Ste.Marie du Mont.

7th June – Open Day at Cherbourg Maupertus Airport, Airborne drop 14:30 hrs Ecausseville.

8th June – Airborne drop 13:00 at La Fiere, Airborne drop 19:30 hrs,  St. Mere.
