Shawn Mack (center), the 2008 Safety Leader of the Year receiptent, received congratulations from Missy Zingsheim and Karen Reinhardt from Ground Support Worldwide, as well as Bill Garghill, Banyan's Director of Customer Support and Don Campion, Banyan's President.Shawn Mack, Banyan’s line service Director of Training, was recognized with the 2008 Safety Leader of the Year Award from Ground Support Worldwide Magazine at the Aviation Industry Expo in Dallas, Texas.

“I am honored to receive the 2008 Safety Award and accept it on not only on my behalf, but also on behalf of every teammate at Banyan,” Mack said. He also said the award would not have been possible without the inspiration and leadership from the Banyan management as well as the commitment and hard work displayed by every teammate at Banyan.

“The procedure we follow has resulted in a flawless safety record for Banyan,” Mack said.

Mack received this award for implementing safety towing procedures at Banyan Air Service. With an average of 100 aircraft movements per day, Banyan needed a refined spotting procedure to improve aircraft movements. Without a standard for spotting aircraft and marshaling, the line technicians would perform these tasks differently.

Mack worked with veteran teammates to expand their spotting procedure and developed a series of step-by-step actions that supplement the information in the National Air Transportation Association (NATA) Safety 1st® training video. The new spotting procedure is conducted during training sessions and results in the tug drivers feeling confident in their spotters and an improved safety record.

Bill Garghill, Banyan’s Director of Customer Support said the team congratulated Mack on receiving the award and said he was not only a role model to the team but also someone who always displayed a total commitment to safety.

“He constantly looks for ways to promote safety and improve our systems,” Garghill said. “We are certainly proud to have Shawn on our team.”

Shawn is certified by NATA as a trainer for the Safety 1st line service training program. He is responsible for training Banyan’s 37 line technicians as well as recurrent training for supervisors.
