Ask AC-U-KWIK: What is the oldest continuously active airport currently listed in AC-U-KWIK?

Established in 1911, Hamburg Airport (EDDH) in Hamburg, Germany, was primarily used for airship flights when it first opened. In 1948, it was used as a staging area during the Berlin Airlift. The airport has grown to 10 times its original geographic size and handles over 15 million commercial passengers yearly. It is also a thriving business aviation airport with four full-service FBOs.

The oldest US airport listed in AC-U-KWIK is the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (KMSP) that was first established in 1920 as “Speedway Field.” It currently handles over 36 million commercial passengers per year.

Aviation historians may be quick to point out that the airport in College Park, Md., (KCGS) has been continuously operating since 1909 and is technically the oldest in the world. However, it is not listed in the AC-U-KWIK database. In keeping its focus on “business aviation,” AC-U-KWIK only includes airports with hard surface runways that are over 3,000 feet in length. College Park’s single runway is 2,600 feet.
